The structure of wetlands enables them to absorb rainfall and thus reduce the volume of water that enters into rivers and streams which naturally lowers the risk of flooding.

  1. Wetlands in all planet has a very important role. Unfortunately, we were changing land use for urban growth and were affecting a control runoff + infiltration environmental service, increasing impervious which allows urban areas flood risks. Wetlands protection is included at REDD+ (http://www.un-redd.org/aboutredd/tabid/102614/default.aspx) and most of green building rating systems promote a wetland special protection policies.
